I first remember reading about Tumbleweed the Tiny House Company a few years ago while I was browsing the web searching for a cheap, unconventional living solution for my husband, myself, and our 2 small dogs. They only had a few small plans back then, but I was hooked on the idea. We weren’t searching for a big, clunky house to get away to; we wanted something that we could move and take with us to whatever destination we chose next.

The tiny homes are obviously meant for single people or couples that don’t want to be glued down to any one location, but even still, they have been met with wonder, awe, and strangely, hostility. It’s been called a fad and a “rich man’s hobby” by a few disgruntled commenters on various blogs and websites, but the truth is that these tiny houses are here to stay.

When The Cost Of Home Ownership Is Too High

Why won’t they fade out? As the cost of financing a traditional home is ridiculous (my own mother has been paying $1,000 a month on her home for 14 years and still owes over $80,000 on the original $113,000 loan!), more and more people are looking for unconventional means of acquiring a secure place to call their own. Mortgages are insane with the amounts of interest that have to be paid over a period of 30 or 40 years. And who wants to decide where they’re going to live for the next 40 years and make that kind of commitment, anyway? The average U.S. resident will move as many as 16 times in their life time! Why would anyone want to commit to 30 years of financing in a location they probably won’t even stay in?

The Option To Live For Little And Save Much

If a single person or a couple wants to get a financial kick start into the world, a tiny house is perfect. It allows them to save money while either still living on their parents’ property or while financing a small piece of land that won’t take them 40 years to pay for. If you’re looking to get back to fiscally conservative principles in a country that’s drowning in debt both on a national level and on an individual level, a tiny house just might help you get back on your feet.

Building Is Cheaper Than Buying

If you have construction experience, building a tiny house is definitely cheaper than buying one pre-made. You can own a home for a fraction of the price of what most people will ever own one for and you’ll own it many, many years sooner than they will. And when you move, it goes with you, so you won’t have the extra expense of moving everything you own, selling your home, etc.

Something pretty cool that I ran across is the Camano Cabin design by V+C Architects. It’s the only set of plans for a cabin that they actually offer for sale, but what’s given is a perfect little house built for 2 with an upstairs loft. If you’re looking for a small, simple cabin design for your piece of property, but don’t like the rustic look, this one’s for you.
